GS1 Company Prefix: Cost, Capacity, and What Sunrise 2027 Changes

Every barcode conversation ends up at the same question: where do the numbers come from? For UPCs on products, SSCCs on pallets, and GLNs on ship-to locations, the answer is one number your company licenses once. The GS1 Company Prefix.

It might be the least understood purchase in commerce operations. GS1's own materials explain what the prefix is but skip the arithmetic, and a cottage industry of barcode resellers does well out of the confusion. So here is the arithmetic, the pricing model, the cases where you can skip GS1 entirely, and an honest read on what the 2D barcode shift (GS1 Sunrise 2027) changes.

What a GS1 Company Prefix actually is

GS1 is the not-for-profit that runs the global identification system behind retail barcodes. Join through a national member organization, GS1 US in the United States, and you license a Company Prefix: a string of 4 to 12 digits that is globally unique to your company.

That one prefix is the root of every identifier family you will use. GTINs, the numbers inside UPC and EAN barcodes, identify products. SSCCs identify pallets, cartons, and other logistics units. GLNs identify facilities and ship-to points. Same prefix underneath all three.

Notice the word license. You never own a prefix outright. You license it, renew it annually, and that license record is what retailers, marketplaces, and trading partners check when they verify your barcodes are really yours.

What it costs, and the trap to avoid

GS1 US prices prefixes by capacity tier: an initial license fee plus an annual renewal, both scaling with how many identifiers the prefix can generate. Entry tiers start in the low hundreds of dollars. High-capacity prefixes run into the thousands. Fees change, so trust GS1 US's live pricing page over any blog post, including this one.

Two things are worth knowing before you spend.

The resold-UPC trap. Third-party sites sell "cheap UPC codes" carved out of prefixes licensed to other companies, often defunct ones from before a 2002 policy change. Retailers and Amazon check the GS1 registry, and those codes fail the check. Worse, you can never build SSCCs or GLNs on them, because the underlying prefix was never yours. The discount buys you a number that identifies someone else.

The single-GTIN nuance. GS1 US also sells GTINs one at a time. Legitimate option, and the right one for a company with two products and no palletized retail flow. But single GTINs come without a company prefix, and no prefix means no SSCCs. The moment a routing guide asks for pallet labels, the one-at-a-time plan stops being the economical choice.

The capacity math nobody shows you

An SSCC is 18 digits: one extension digit, your company prefix, a serial reference, and a check digit. The structural rule is rigid. Prefix length plus serial reference always totals 16 digits, and that single constraint decides your capacity forever:

The extension digit, one free digit you assign yourself, multiplies raw serial capacity by ten. The table already includes it.

Run the example: a 7-digit prefix leaves 9 serial digits, which is a billion serials per extension value and ten billion SSCCs in total. A warehouse shipping 500 pallets a day would need 54,000 years to exhaust that. Capacity anxiety points the wrong way.

The direction that actually bites is the bottom of the table. A 12-digit budget prefix generates 100,000 SSCCs, which sounds like plenty until a 3PL doing 300 pallets a day runs the numbers and finds the prefix dry in under a year. And no, you can't just start over at serial zero: GS1's General Specifications say an SSCC must not be reused for at least 12 months after shipment, and plenty of trading partners hold you to longer. Size the tier for pallet volume plus your GTIN count, not for the product list alone.

Where the prefix earns its keep: the dock

Products get the attention. The dock is where the prefix does its work.

Every GS1 logistics label carries an SSCC in a GS1-128 barcode under Application Identifier (00). GS1-128 is Code 128 with a leading FNC1 character that declares "this is GS1 data" — and that FNC1 is the reason generic barcode fonts fail routing-guide compliance even when the bars look right to the eye.

The same SSCC also travels electronically, on the ASN or EDI 856, and the receiving dock reconciles the scan against the notice. One mistyped digit and the pallet exists physically but not electronically. Anyone who has spent a Friday afternoon re-labeling a truckload over a transposed digit already knows why check-digit validation happens before printing, not after.

Amazon deserves its own line because the two programs differ. Vendor Central shipments run on SSCC pallet and carton labels inside ASN flows. FBA does not; it uses Amazon's own box and pallet IDs. When a routing guide says "SSCC-18 label," it means the GS1-128 (00) label.

Do you even need one?

Honest answers, because the prefix isn't for everyone.

Selling only on Amazon with brand-registry standing? Amazon's GTIN exemption exists for this case. Approved brands in certain categories can list without GS1 barcodes at all. It stops working the day you sell anywhere else, but for a single-channel brand it's real money saved.

Internal-only labeling? Any 18-digit code that passes the mod-10 check will scan inside your own four walls. Test labels, rack trials, WMS configuration. No membership required, and our generator marks demo-prefix output as test labels for exactly that workflow.

Anything that crosses a company boundary? License the prefix. Retailers, 3PLs, and marketplaces verify ownership, and an unlicensed SSCC can collide with the legitimate holder's numbers.

GS1 Sunrise 2027 is the retail industry's target date for point-of-sale systems to scan 2D barcodes, QR codes carrying GS1 Digital Link, alongside the classic UPC. It is the biggest change to the consumer barcode since 1974, and it is pulling adjacent change with it: the EU's Digital Product Passport rules expect product data resolvable from the identifier, and Digital Link is the addressing scheme that lets one QR code serve checkout, consumer transparency, and regulators at once.

Here is what that means for the warehouse, concretely: almost nothing changes at the pallet. SSCC logistics labels stay GS1-128 linear barcodes under current specifications. ASN and EDI 856 flows are untouched. The change lands upstream, on product packaging and product data. I'd worry less about label printers and more about whether your product data can actually fill what the QR code is supposed to resolve to — that gap is where Sunrise 2027 projects stall.

The prefix is the constant through all of it. The GTIN inside tomorrow's QR code is built on the same Company Prefix as the SSCC on today's pallet. License it once and you are denominated in the identifier system both eras use.
